I will make them and the places surrounding my hill a blessing. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing.
What must we do when the abundance of blessings threaten the fruit we produce?
In crossing over from the wilderness to the promise, the people stood before a flooding River Jordan (Joshua 3:15).
For the Jordan to be at flood stage probably meant there was an abundance of rain in the areas surrounding the river. In fact the scripture states that it was “harvest time”. While rain is good and necessary for the crops to grow, it can contribute to the flood waters that threaten the crops when they should be harvested.
There are times when the blessings we receive become a threat to our productivity. It may be a job or the dream platform, a new addition to the family or new relationship, increased recognition or financial blessings. In these scenarios, it becomes important to see and appreciate the blessing and still protect the harvest. When the additions create a hectic schedule – caring for the children, making time for the relationships, building dreams in overtime – it is necessary to continue seeking higher ground and take our growth with us.
If abundance becomes a hindrance to spiritual growth, it is time to bring the Presence of the Father into back into center focus (v.17).
Be deliberate about maintaining the progressive growth in character and mental strength you have developed through spiritual discipline and faith. For me this means keeping my prayer appointments and journaling. Prayer creates an open channel of communication with Yahweh (God) every day and journaling empties my mind and allows me to step into the present moment, with full awareness.
The spiritual practices we are creating promise a harvest that will last for more than a moment. If protected, the harvest will get us through the dry season, when famine threatens and we are longing for rain. In the meantime, don’t let abundance uproot what has been planted inside of you. Enjoy the showers of blessings and continue to produce!
Prayer/Journal: Father I thank you for your many blessings. (As I name my blessings), I realize that your love for me goes beyond the temporal additions to my life and that you have been sowing seeds of peace and joy, faith and love. As I expand, I promise to protect what has been planted and get to the harvest, to the days when I will reap the fully mature fruit of Your Spirit.
Today, my blessings will result in a greater harvest of His fruit
